Folk Trails Feature on John Bertangle

What’s your name and where are you from?

John, I’m from Leicester but born in Northumberland.

What is your local folk club or place you regularly perform?

Melton Folk Club

How did you get into folk music?

Listening to records. Bert Jansch , Pentangle ,Sandy Denny

Who is/are your folk and/or musical inspiration?

Bert Jansch

What is your favourite song/piece from your set?

Tough question. But I do enjoy playing and singing ‘Fresh As A Sweet Sunday Morning‘ By Bert Jansch.

(We’re starting to see a pattern…)

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s folk festival?

As many acts as I can. There were some great audiences last time and it’s great meeting with the people who come to listen too.

Tell us about the best gig you have ever been to?

Bert Jansch in Leicester at, what was, the Phoenix Theatre: September 2003. I managed to get a seat just in front of him and was mesmerised by his singing and guitar playing.

(yes, there’s definitely a theme emerging)

Choose a Christmas song?

It has to be Bert Jansch’s version of ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’.

(It must be love! Although this seems to be a popular one with our acts as Malcolm Dunn picked the one too!)

If I were to buy you a drink (I’m not saying I will, but…) at the festival what would you want?

An I.P.A. beer would be fine… to lubricate the throat.
